At the horse farm students worked with the following concepts:
Shopping - Students pretended to run a horse farm and shopped for items at a "store", working with discounts and percentages.
Fractions - Students worked with basic fractions and word problems with fractions while riding a horse, which engaged their brains differently than in a classroom setting. They also viewed fractions from the top of a horse while looking down at a circle broken up into pieces.
Ratios - Students learned about the proportions of horse anatomy and painted (with non-toxic paint!) the ratios of each part on a horse.
Proportions - Students experienced that feeding horses requires math. They had to figure out how to combine the grain and hay based on a horse's weight to ensure proper nutrition. Proportions were used to set up the problems.
